EEO: The Australian Government gets serious about energy reduction

The Australian Government's Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program encourages large energy-using businesses to improve their energy efficiency. It does this by requiring businesses to identify, evaluate and report publicly on cost effective energy savings opportunities. This applies to companies that consume over 0.5 Peta Joules (PJ) per annum (about $10 million in electricity costs). This applies to about 250 mining, resource processing, manufacturing, transport and commercial businesses.

The program's requirements are set out in the  Energy Efficiency Opportunities legislation, which came into effect on 1 July 2006. Industry guidelines and other program support material are also available to help corporations understand their obligations.

Several years ago, VRT developed the RUMS (Regional Utility Management System) to meet the specific requirements of the Department of Defence, the largest energy consumer in Australia.
